چکیده

Over the last decade significant progress in optoelectronic devices and their integration techniques have made Free-Space Optical Interconnects (FSOI) one of the few physical approaches that can potentially address the increasingly complex communication requirements at the board-to-board and chip-to-chip levels. In this paper, we review the recent advances made and discuss future research directions needed to bring FSOI to the realm of practice.

Combination of binary and analog lithography to fabricate efficient planar-integrated free-space optical (PIFSO) interconnects

Planar-integrated free-space optics is a highly suitable system concept for realizing densely packed parallel free-space optical short-range interconnects that are compatible with established design and fabrication methods of integrated microelectronics [1]. For use in real-world IT systems, however, the coupling efficiency of such PIFSO interconnects needs to surpass levels of the order of –15...

Optical Interconnects in Systems

Future enhancement of system performance will decreasingly rely on reduction in transistor dimensions. Rather, performance gains will increasingly come from improved hardware and software architectures and emerging technologies such as optical interconnects which provide a new design-space for system designers. It is possible that hybrid opto-electronic interconnects may revolutionize system im...

In Situ Measurement of Misalignment Errors in Free-Space Optical Interconnects

A nonobtrusive technique for measuring misalignment errors in multistage free-space optical interconnects is proposed. The technique makes use of dedicated microoptics to relay higher order dedicated alignment beams generated by an optical power supply onto alignment detectors located on the periphery of a smart pixel chip. An implementation of this technique for measuring lateral (x–y) misalig...

Modeling of RF Waves in Free Space Optical Communication System Under Gamma-Gamma Turbulent Channel Effect

In this paper, an enhancement design of communication system using optical radio frequency (RF) waves in free space optical communication (FSO) system is presented. To our knowledge, it is the first time that the effect of Gamma-Gamma turbulent channel model on the performance of the proposed system is analyzed and simulated. To obtain an optical communication system with good performance and h...
